What is Wireless testing?
When addressing ”Wireless” Testing we refer to performance evaluation on electrical devices which intended use is characterized by an operation without wires.
In today’s technology environment the largest group is represented by devices that implement radio equipment, that intentionally emits and/or receives radio waves for the purpose of radio communication and/or radio determination. Well known radio standards utilized are Short Range technologies like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, LR-WPAN, RFID as well as Long Range LPWA technologies like LoRa, EC-GSM-IoT, NB-IoT, CDMA, GSM, WCDMA and LTE.
The second area of interest is the Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) technology used to transfer electric power to mobile devices without a wire. WPT technologies can be divided into near-field (nonradiative) techniques and far-field (radiative) techniques. At TÜV SÜD we are focusing on near-field techniques which have reached a reasonable spread in the consumer space. Near-field techniques can be distinguished in:
- Magnetic induction WPT
- Magnetic resonance WPT
- Capacitive coupling WPT
Magnetic inductive WPT is the oldest and most widely used wireless power technology in commercial products. The range of products implementing magnetic inductive charging spans from handheld communication devices like laptops and tablet computers, digital media players and smart phones over cordless appliances for wet environments as toothbrushes and shavers to electric vehicles as cars, buses and trains.
Why is Wireless testing important?
The radiation of electromagnetic fields for the purpose of radio communication/determination and power transfer is regulated by mandatory requirements in most international markets including the EU, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan. This applies to both radio and WPT devices.
Corresponding EMC, EMF and RF testing is necessary to help you meet regulatory requirements, improve product performance and reduce the risk of costly non-compliance. Third-party conformity assessments also helps to strengthen your competitive position in the market.
